Government Scientists Claim Biofuel Breakthrough

MYFOXNY.COM - Government scientists claim that they have used a microbe to convert plant matter directly into a fuel that can be used in regular car engines.

It's called isobutanol and they say it burns with a heat value higher than ethanol and similar to gasoline.

The Department of Energy claims the breakthrough could eventually help to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil.

The department is developing biofuels from wheat and rice straw, corn stover, lumber wastes, and plants specifically developed for bio-fuel production that require far less fertilizer and other energy inputs.

The work was done at the Department of Energy's BioEnergy Science Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Using consolidated bioprocessing, a team led by James Liao of the University of California at Los Angeles for the first time produced isobutanol directly from cellulose.

"Unlike ethanol, isobutanol can be blended at any ratio with gasoline and should eliminate the need for dedicated infrastructure in tanks or vehicles," said Liao. "Plus, it may be possible to use isobutanol directly in current engines without modification."

Compared to ethanol, higher alcohols such as isobutanol are better candidates for gasoline replacement because they have an energy density, octane value and Reid vapor pressure - a measurement of volatility - that is much closer to gasoline, Liao said.
