McAfee quarterly income rises
McAfee Inc. shares rose 4% to $25.55 in after-hours trading Thursday. The company said first-quarter net income was $40.9 million, or 25 cents a share, compared with $36 million, or 21 cents a share, during the same period in the prior year. On a pro forma basis, the computer security company reported per-share income of 37 cents, compared with 27 cents last year. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had expected a per-share result of 30 cents. McAfee said quarterly revenue was $272 million, up from $235.7 million last year. Analysts were looking for revenue of $262 million. For the second quarter, the company sees revenue of $260 million to $280 million, and pro forma per-share income of 27 cents to 32 cents. Analysts are looking for quarterly revenue of $269 million, and per-share income of 31 cents.


KLA-Tencor reports lower profit, sales
KLA-Tencor Corp. , the No. 2 U.S. chip-equipment maker, late Thursday reported its net income fell to $98 million, or 48 cents a share, versus net income of $123 million, or 61 cents a share, in the same period last year. The latest results were affected by expensing for stock options, which lowered the company's profit by $31 million. Sales fell to $518 million from $541.6 million, but topped the expectations of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call. San Jose, Calif.-based KLA-Tencor makes tools that help test for defects during the chipmaking process.



Invitrogen net income plunges; sales up
Invitrogen Corp. on Thursday reported first-quarter net income of $19.2 million, or 35 cents a share, compared with $47.1 million, or 82 cents a share, for the same period a year ago. Revenue was $309 million vs. last year's $277.1 million. Excluding one-time items, the Carlsbad, Calif.-based biopharmaceutical concern would have reported earnings of 90 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call projected earnings of 78 cents a share. Invitrogen shares closed Thursday up $1.15, or 1.8%, to $64.40.


Flextronics International profit falls 58% -
Flextronics International Ltd. on Thursday reported a fourth-quarter profit of $43 million, or 7 cents a share, compared to $74.2 million, or 12 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue slipped to $3.53 billion from $3.54 billion. Excluding charges and one-time items, the electronics contract manufacturer earned $98 million, or 16 cents a share, to beat the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call, who forecast a profit of 15 cents a share.


Digital River quarterly income rises
Digital River Inc. shares fell to $44 in after-hours trading Thursday. The company said first-quarter net income was $16.4 million, or 41 cents a share, compared with $14 million, or 35 cents a share, during the same period last year. The e-commerce outsourcing company said quarterly revenue was $78 million, up from $54.5 million last year. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had expected revenue of $76 million. For the second quarter, Digital River sees revenue of $70 million, and per-share income of 28 cents, or 37 cents on a pro forma basis



RealNetworks profit skyrockets -
RealNetworks Inc. reported a first quarter profit Thursday that skyrocketed from the same period last year. Net income for the quarter came in at $24.9 million, or 14 cents a share, compared to $814,000, or breakeven on a per share basis, for last year. Analysts were expecting a profit of 13 cents a share, according to consensus estimates from Thomson First Call. The majority of estimates reflect the expensing of stock options. Revenue for the period rose 13% to $86.6 million compared to $76.6 million last year. Analysts were expecting revenue of $85.2 million. RealNetworks shares closed the regular session down less than 1% at $10.10.


Openwave swings to quarterly profit
Openwave Systems Inc. after Thursday's closing bell reported fiscal third-quarter net earnings of $9.57 million, 10 cents a share. In the same period last year, the company reported a net loss of $2.61 million, or 4 cents a share. Excluding items, profit came in at 21 cents a share compared with 7 cents a share last year. Revenue at the Redwood City, Calif.-based software company rose to $113 million from $106.3 million last year. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast earnings of 19 cents a share on revenue of $112 million.


Altera profit dips, sales up
Altera Corp. late Thursday reported its first-quarter net income dipped to $58.7 million, or 16 cents a share, down from $63.8 million, or 17 cents a share, in the same period last year. The latest results included stock option expense charges that amounted to 4 cents a share. Sales rose 11% to $292.8 million, short of the expectations of analysts polled by Thomson First Call. San Jose, Calif.-based Altera makes chips used in a wide range of products such as Internet routers, mobile-phone base stations, flat-panel televisions and DVD players.


Gateway Inc. reports loss of $12.3 million -
Gateway Inc. on Thursday reported a first-quarter loss of $12.3 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with a loss of $5.2 million, or a penny a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 29% to $1.08 billion from $838 million. In a statement, Gateway interim Chief Executive Rick Snyder said that excluding $14 million in litigation charges the company "essentially broke even" during the quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had forecast Gateway to earn 2 cents a share on $942 million in revenue


MetLife lifts 2006 forecast; quarterly results top estimates
MetLife Inc. raised its 2006 profit forecast late Thursday after the life insurer reported better-than-expected first-quarter results. Net income came in at $714 million, or 93 cents a share, versus $987 million, or $1.33 a share, a year earlier, the company reported. Operating earnings, which exclude net realized investment gains and losses and other one-time items, were $1.03 billion, or $1.33 a share, up from $822 million, or $1.11 a share, in the same period a year ago, MetLife said. The company was expected to earn $1.09 a share, according to the average estimate of 17 analysts in a Thomson First Call survey. MetLife lifted its forecast for full-year operating earnings to between $4.55 and $4.75 a share, from a previous range of $4.25 to $4.50 a share.


Allegheny Energy more than doubles net profit
Allegheny Energy Inc. reported Thursday first-quarter net income of $113.4 million, or 67 cents a share, up from $42.6 million, or 29 cents, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter rose to $845.6 million from $754 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had predicted the Greensburg, Pa. energy provider would hand in earnings of 60 cents a share on $800 million in revenue.


Lexar Media quarterly loss widens as rev falls 46%
Lexar Media Inc. after Thursday's closing bell reported a first-quarter net loss of $36.8 million, or 45 cents a share, vs. a net loss of $9.59 million, or 12 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue at the Fremont, Calif.-based maker of flash memory products fell 46% to $124.7 million from $232.4 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast a loss of 23 cents a share on revenue of $178 million. Lexar is being acquired by Micron Technology Inc. in a deal that still requires shareholder approval.


On Semi quarterly profit more than doubles
On Semiconductor Corp. shares were down a penny at $7 in after-hours trading late Thursday. After the closing bell, the company reported first-quarter net earnings of $40.4 million, or 12 cents a share, up from $14.8 million, or 4 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 10% to $334 million from $302.4 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast earnings of 11 cents a share on revenue of $331 million. The Phoenix-based company forecast second-quarter revenue of $350 million to $355 million. Analysts are looking for revenue of $343 million.
