Mercury Computer swings to quarterly loss

Mercury Computer Systems Inc. after Thursday's closing bell swung to a second-quarter net loss of $1.04 million, or 5 cents a share, as sales fell and cost of revenue and expenses rose. In the same period last year, the provider of computing systems and software posted net earnings of $1.23 million, or 6 cents a share. Excluding stock-based compensation and restructuring costs, among other items, Mercury reported per-share earnings of a penny. Revenue fell 7.3% to $57.9 million to $62.5. For 2007, the company sees a net loss of about 85 cents, or 13 cents, excluding items, on revenue of about $230 million. Mercury had previously expected revenue of $235 million to $245 million. For the third quarter, the company expects a per-share net loss of about 31 cents, or 18 cents, excluding items, on revenue of $55 million.

Chartered Semi quarterly income falls; revenue declines

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing after Thursday's closing bell said fourth-quarter net income fell, as revenue declined and expenses rose, to $6.43 million, or a penny per American Depositary Share, from $26.5 million, or 8 cents per ADS, during the same period in the prior year. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were looking for a per-ADS result of a penny. Chartered said revenue in the quarter fell to $339.1 million from $367.2 million, while Wall Street had expected $337 million. For the first quarter, the midpoint of the company's view is $324 million for revenue, and a penny per ADS. Analysts are looking for first-quarter revenue of $336 million, with a breakeven per-share result.



Bebe quarterly earnings fall

Bebe Stores Inc. after Thursday's closing bell reported second-quarter net earnings of $24.3 million, or 26 cents a share, compared with $25 million, or 27 cents a share, in the same period last year, on the back of lower merchandise margins and higher expenses. The retailer of women's apparel and accessories said revenue rose 17% to $196.8 million from $167.9 million last year. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected per-share earnings of 28 cents, on revenue of $198 million. Same-store sales for the period rose 5.5% vs. 2.2% in the prior year. The company sees third-quarter per-share earnings of 13 cents to 16 cents, on comparable-store sale growth in the low single-digit range. In 2007, Bebe plans to open 40 to 45 new stores, expanding or relocating 10 stores and renovating 12 stores.

Western Digital reports $128 million profit

Western Digital Corp. on Thursday reported a fiscal second-quarter profit of $128 million, or 57 cents a share, up 23% from a year ago when the hard disk-drive maker earned $104 million, or 47 cents a share. Revenue rose 28% to $1.4 billion from $1.1 billion. The company beat the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call, who forecast Western Digital to earn 53 cents a share on $1.37 billion in revenue.

Lattice Semiconductor swings to quarterly profit

Lattice Semiconductor Corp. after Thursday's closing bell reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $937,000, or a penny a share. During the same period a year ago, the Hillsboro, Ore.-based company posted a net loss of $23 million, or 20 cents a share. Excluding certain items such as stock-based compensation and restructuring charges, net income was $4.8 million, or 4 cents a share. Revenue rose 15% to $61.8 million from $54 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 3 cents a share on revenue of $61 million. Additionally, Lattice said it expects first-quarter revenue to fall 2% to 7% sequentially, and for gross margin to be flat, plus or minus 1%.

Leggett & Platt net profit rises 55%, sales slip 2.2%

Leggett & Platt Inc. late Thursday said earnings for the fourth quarter rose to $70 million, or 38 cents a share, from $45.3 million or 24 cents a share in the year-earlier period. The Carthage, Mo. maker of furniture-piece and engineered metals parts said sales fell 2.2% to $1.31 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had forecast earnings of 36 cents on revenue of $1.34 billion. It expects to make 31 to 36 cents a share in the first quarter; analysts see 41 cents. Shares fell 1.1% to $24.15 before the close of trading.




Informatica quarterly income rises; revenue gains

Informatica Corp. after Thursday's closing bell said fourth-quarter net income rose, as revenue gained, to $13.9 million, or 15 cents a share, from $13.6 million, or 14 cents a share, during the same period in the prior year. Before items, quarterly per-share income rose to 20 cents from 16 cents in the prior year. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were looking for per-share income of 18 cents. The provider of data integration software said quarterly revenue rose to $91.8 million from $79.8 million in the prior year, while Wall Street was looking for $90 million.

Columbia Sportswear quarterly earnings rise

Columbia Sportswear Co. after Thursday's closing bell reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $38.4 million, or $1.06 a share, compared with $36.6 million, or 97 cents a share, in the same period last year, boosted by strong sales. The maker of outdoor apparel and footwear said revenue rose 15% to $361.8 million from $314.1 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had expected per-share earnings of 98 cents, on revenue of $357 million. For the first quarter, the company sees per-share earnings in a range of 57 cents to 59 cents, on net sales growth outlook of about 11%.

Synaptics net earnings nearly double; sales jump 57%

Synaptics Inc. said Thursday evening that fiscal second-quarter net earnings were $9.3 million, or 32 cents a share, up from $4.8 million, or 18 cents a share, last year. Earnings excluding share-based compensation and restructuring costs were $13 million, or 44 cents a share. Sales rose 57% to $76. 1 million from $48.6 million a year ago. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected per-share earnings of 34 cents on sales of $71 million. The company forecast fiscal third-quarter earnings of $58 million to $61 million. Analysts currently expect earnings of $55 million for the third quarter.

Openwave swings to quarterly loss

Openwave Systems Inc. after Thursday's closing bell said it swung to a net loss in the second-quarter, as revenue declined and expenses rose, of $15.8 million, or 17 cents a share. For the same period in the prior year, the open software products company said quarterly net income was $8.44 million, or 11 cents a share. Before items, Openwave said the per-share loss for the quarter was 3 cents. In the prior year, the per-share gain before items was 22 cents. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting a per-share loss of 8 cents. Openwave said quarterly revenue fell to $84.2 million from $104.5 million in the prior year, while analysts were looking for $84 million.

Activision sees better-than-expected earnings for Q3

Activision Inc. reported preliminary results for its third fiscal quarter Thursday afternoon that were higher than Wall Street's expectations. For the December quarter, the video game publisher expects revenue of $822.8 million with earnings of 41 cents a share. Analysts were expecting revenue of $618.2 million and earnings of 28 cents a share, according to Thomson Financial. The company also lowered its forecast for the fourth fiscal quarter, citing legal expenses from its ongoing stock-options probe and the shift of a video game title to the 2008 fiscal year. Activision now expects to record a loss of 10 cents a share on revenue of $170 million for the quarter. Analysts had expected earnings of 2 cents a share on revenue of $180.5 million.
