Russian oil firm Lukoil said on Thursday it would launch two new berths at Vysotsk this April, doubling the Baltic port’s capacity to more than 10 million tons of oil and refined products a year, the Reuters news agency reports.

Vladimir Kaluzhenov, head of Lukoil’s oil product business in northwest Russia, told Reuters the second and third berths at Vysotsk would be available from early April.

Work to deepen a channel to the port had also been finished, Kaluzhenov said, allowing tankers of up to 60,000 deadweight tons to load at the port, three times the current limit.

Lukoil’s Vysotsk export terminal is just one of a number of outlets for Russian oil on the Baltic coast, which has the closest ports in Russia to the markets of Western Europe.

The most active hub, Primorsk, tripled its crude oil shipments to 44.6 million tons last year, and there are at least a dozen other oil export projects along the coast which could push Baltic oil shipments beyond 170 million tons a year (3.4 million barrels per day) if they all come to fruition.

The first berth at Vysotsk was completed in May last year, giving the port an initial monthly export capacity of 300,000 tons of crude oil and products, and rising to 400,000 tons a month with the addition of a new rail link to the terminal.
