NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - As oil goes, gas prices go.

As crude oil prices have soared to record levels recently amid disruptions from hurricanes and unrest in Nigeria, the cost of a gallon of unleaded, regular gasoline rose by 2.1 cents last week to $1.938 cents, up from $1.573 a year earlier, the Energy Information Administration reported.

The record high for gasoline prices is $2.064 per gallon, hit in the week ending May 24, 2004, according to the EIA.
Meanwhile, the approach of the winter heating fuel season boosted the price of diesel fuel to a record high at $2.052 per gallon, up 4.1 cents from the previous week and 60.8 cents a year earlier.

As usual, gasoline prices were highest on the West Coast, particularly in California, where they topped out at $2.198 per gallon. All regions of the country reported price increases, except for the Midwest, which fell 1.2 cents to $1.894 a gallon. Top of page
