Japan's Softbank to post 22.5 bln yen gain on sale of shares in Yahoo Japan
TOKYO (AFX) - Softbank Corp said it will book an extraordinary profit of 22.5 bln yen for the year ending March 31 arising from its sale of shares in Yahoo Japan Corp.
Softbank said in a statement that wholly-owned subsidiary BB Technology Co had unloaded 173,000 shares in Yahoo Japan, a stake of 0.6 pct, for about 23.3 bln yen.
The sale is meant to ensure that Yahoo Japan remains listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and also to finance in part its acquisition of Vodafone KK, the Japanese unit of Vodafone PLC of the UK.
The bourse here stipulates that a company will be delisted if major stockholders own more than 75 pct of its outstanding shares.
Softbank said its latest sale of shares means the combined stake in Yahoo Japan held by Yahoo! Inc of the US and the Softbank group is now 74.7 pct.
On its own, the Softbank group now holds 41.3 pct of Yahoo Japan.
The company said it has no plans for further sales of Yahoo Japan shares.
