A senior McCain source said Saturday that officials were considering turning the convention into a massive telethon to raise money for the Red Cross and other agencies to help with hurricane aid.

"He wants to do something service oriented if and when the storm hits and it's as bad as it's expected to be now," the McCain source said.

McCain: "We must redirect our efforts from the really celebratory event of the nomination of president and vice president of our party to acting as all Americans," he said, adding that it was likely the event would change into a "call to the nation for action."

They are also hoping to get McCain himself to a storm-affected area as soon as possible.

John McCain, der auf diesem Konvent zum offiziellen republikanischen Präsidentschaftskandidaten nominiert werden soll, gab sich von den Ereignissen in der Region des Golfs von Mexiko tief betroffen. Er war gestern in die bedrohte Region gefahren, um sich vor Ort von den geplanten Schutzvorkehrungen zu informieren. In einer kurzen Stellungnahme meinte er: "Bereitet Euch auf das Schlimmste vor. Und das tun wir als Nation: Wir werden zusammenstehen und handeln. Wir werden die notwendige Hilfe geben und unsere Arme ausbreiten - so wie es Amerikaner immer getan haben in Zeiten, die uns herausgefordert haben."

Ganz anders Obama:

Obama says they're monitoring the situation and urged continued cooperation between FEMA and the Gulf Coast states, noting that not just Louisiana is likely going to be affected but Mississippi, Alabama and parts of Texas.

Word came late Saturday that John McCain would visit an emergency command post in Jackson, Mississippi on Sunday. Asked if he would visit the area, Obama said that because of the large number of staff and press traveling with him, he might be a distraction.

"I will do whatever is required that is useful but right now the main thing that's useful is letting everybody out there know, please evacuate the area," said Obama.

Rund 2 Mio. US-Amerikaner wurden zwangsevakuiert. Das gibt jede Menge Leid und Trauer bei den Betroffenen - den vielen Verlierern. Aber es gibt auch jede Menge Fernsehbilder von Schicksalen, denen dann von Großvater McCain Trost und Hilfe zugesprochen werden wird. Die Sache ist für McCain fast ein Selbstläufer - er dürfte der große Gewinner werden!

Ich erwarte, dass nach dem Parteitag der Republikaner McCain in den Umfragen führen wird, und zwar bis zu den Wahlen im November.

Es ist eine Ironie der Geschichte, dass ausgerechnet ein Produkt des Klimawandels - ein Hurrikane - dazu beitragen wird, dass dieser Klimawandel fast ungebremst so weitergehen kann.
McCain dürfte der zukünftige Präsident werden - es sei denn, er nutzt diese Chance zur "Pathos-und-Spenden-Nummer" nur schlecht.
