Mitsubishi Heavy posts net profit of 4.4 bln yen in Q1 on surge in new orders

TOKYO (AFX) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd posted net profit of 4.4 bln yen for the first quarter to June, supported by a surge in new orders.

In the quarter, Mitsubishi Heavy also posted operating profit of 4.3 bln yen and current profit of 5.7 bln yen on revenue of 536.1 bln yen.

There were no comparative figures because the company only began compiling quarterly results in the current form this year.

"In the first quarter, both current and operating earnings improved by around 10 bln yen from a year earlier and the net performance increased by some 6-7 bln yen," managing director Hiroshi Kan said at a press conference, suggesting that Mitsubishi Heavy suffered losses at all profit levels in the corresponding period of last year.

He however did not elaborate further.

New orders received in the first quarter totalled 530.6 bln yen, up from 400.5 bln yen a year earlier.

"We saw an upsurge in new orders in almost all key sectors, such as shipbuilding, power generation systems and steel structures," Kan said.

"And in line with this upturn we witnessed a major improvement in operating performance at all divisions," he added.

In the first quarter, Mitsubishi Heavy posted operating profits of 4 bln yen in the power generation/turbine division; 400 mln yen in the aviation/aerospace division and 1.7 bln yen in the general-purpose product division. The shipbuilding division however, posted an operating loss of 700 mln yen.

For the full-year to March 2006, Mitsubishi Heavy, Japan's largest engineering and shipbuilding firm , stood by its previous forecasts, projecting net profit of 18 bln yen, current profit of 36 bln yen and operating profit of 57 bln yen on revenue of 2.8 trln yen.

"We believe that we got off to a smooth start in the first quarter and we are on the course to attain our full-year profit forecasts," Kan told a press conference.

The company also forecast full-year to March 2006 new orders of 2.73 trln yen, in line with its earlier forecast.

"But new orders in the steel structure/machine tool division may fall short of the initial target by 80 bln yen (in the aftermath of alleged bid rigging)," Kan said.

"However we can compensate for the shortfall as a result of brisk export demand," he added.
