Universal Detection Technology Emphasizes Growing Threat of Chemical and Biological Attacks in the United States and Abroad

Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (OTCBB: UNDT), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies that protect against biological, chemical, and radiological weapons, believes that the United States needs to update its chemical and biological defense efforts in order to deal with the evolving and growing threat of an attack on the US soil with such agents.
A recent report published by the RAND Corporation, states that "given the inherent secrecy with which states and other actors will conduct [chemical and biological] CB agent development, adversary programs could acquire new CB agents years before US defense planners recognize those agents. After the US intelligence community recognizes those CB agents as threats, the United States will probably need many more years to establish a comprehensive defense against them. Such gaps in CB defense capabilities pose a potentially serious risk to US military operations."
Rogue nations and terrorist groups have developed new and more sophisticated scientific capabilities and dual-use manufacturing sectors have proliferated, increasing the threat of development of lethal chemical or biological agents. The Anthrax attacks of 2001 were one incident which showed how just a few grams of weaponized anthrax sent through the postal system caused such havoc. "In the coming decades, these factors will likely increase the probability that the United States will face 'unknown' CB threats against which existing defenses are inadequate even for US military personnel," the report said.
According to a report by NBC New York, "Security officials are warning the leaders of major Wall Street banks that Al Qaeda terrorists in Yemen may be trying to plan attacks against those financial institutions or their leading executives." Intelligence analysts have suggested they have a general but growing concern that operatives in Yemen may again try to send package bombs of biological and chemical agents through the mail to Wall Street bankers. The latest "Inspire" issue also made reference to trying to use anthrax in an attack, officials said.
"As the world witnesses unrest in some very volatile regions in the Middle East and North Africa, there is a growing concern that weapons of mass destruction can be acquired by rogue regimes and terrorists and be used against the United States and its allies. Universal Detection Technology has grown its product portfolio to address all aspects of CBRNE threats with fast acting detection of such threats," said Jacques Tizabi, CEO of Universal Detection Technology. "We recently added Tularemia to the list of agents that our detection kits can rapidly identify in a sample. We plan to add more detection capabilities for agents such as Brucella and Pox soon as we anticipate the types of agents that might be utilized by terrorists," added Tizabi.

Precision Technologies PTD, will give UNDT an on the ground marketing presence in Japan.
Concerns over food contaminated by radiation from areas surrounding the troubled nuclear plant in Fukushima spread beyond Japan's borders on Monday morning, with world health officials warning of the potential dangers posed by the tainted food.
World Health Organization officials told reporters Monday that Japan should act quickly to ban food sales from areas around the damaged nuclear plant, saying radiation in food is more dangerous than radioactive particles in the air because of accumulation in the human body.
"Walking outside for a day and eating food repeatedly are two different things. This is why they're going to have to take some decisions quickly in Japan to shut down and stop food being used completely from zones which they feel might be affected," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said, according to the Associated Press.

Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (OTCBB: UNDT), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies that protect against biological, chemical, and radiological threats, announced today that it has entered into collaboration with rdnt.org to track radiation levels in Japan. Approved individuals as well as organizations armed with radiation detection devices are helping chart radiation readings across Japan as the country struggles to avoid a nuclear catastrophe.
Earlier today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it will halt imports of dairy products and produce from the area of Japan where a nuclear reactor is leaking radiation. The FDA said Tuesday that those foods will be detained at entry and will not be sold to the public. The agency previously had said it would just step up screening of those foods.

UNDT's Radiation Detection Equipment Marketed in Japan and Singapore by APP Systems
LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/14/11 -- Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (UNDT), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies that protect against biological, chemical, and radiological threats, announced today that it has signed an agreement with APP System Services (APP). APP will market UNDT's radiation detection devices in Japan and Singapore.
APP is a premier sales and service provider for high technology products, in biotech, environmental and defense industries. APP serves both the private and government sectors.
The most recent assessment of the radiation level in Japan is that it is officially equal to Chernobyl. Officials with the company that operates Japan's tsunami-stricken nuclear plant say radioactive contamination in groundwater underneath a reactor has been measured at 10,000 times the government health standard. A spokesman for plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co says the company doesn't believe any drinking water supply is affected. Contaminated water has been pooling at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex since it was damaged by the devastating earthquake and tsunami. It has already leaked into the ocean.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported today that low levels of radiation have turned up in milk samples from two West Coast states. The EPA and the Food and Drug Administration said that radiation was found in a March 25 milk sample from Spokane, Washington. The California Department of Public Health said on its website that a similar result was found March 28 at a dairy in San Luis Obispo County.
"Through our agreement with APP System Services we plan to make our radiation detection products available to a broad market in Japan and Singapore," said Jacques Tizabi, UNDT's Chairman and CEO. "APP will use its sales force to market UNDT's radiation detection devices to both the government and private sectors. While there has been a rush by consumers to quickly purchase hand-held dosimeters, most of which are currently in very short supply by us and other suppliers, there continues to be an interest from institutional customers for more sophisticated detection equipment which we hope to be able to provide not necessarily in the immediate present, but throughout the length of this crisis," he added.

Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (OTCBB: UNDT), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies that protect against biological, chemical, and radiological threats, announced today that it expects to begin the shipment of radiological detection devices to both domestic and Japanese customers based on confirmed purchase orders. The orders include a variety of radiation detection devices such as personal dosimeters, survey meters and surface monitors.
The confirmed orders include orders for the Company's dosimeter systems such as the SOR/T and SOR/RF dosimeters used for measurement of cumulative radiation exposures and the company's advanced survey meters and surface monitors such as the PDS-100 GN and RDS-80A used in detection on contamination on surfaces and in particular food and water. These detectors have a price range from $450.00 to $2,800.00 per unit.
The owners of the Fukushima Daiichi plant said on Sunday, in their first public timetable for ending the crisis that engineers will need six to nine months to bring the damaged nuclear reactors at the power plant under control.
It will take three months to reduce the levels of radioactivity in the plant and restore normal cooling systems in the reactors and spent fuel pools, the Tokyo Electric Power Company announced. Another three to six months will be needed before the reactors are fully shut down and new shells are built around their damaged housings, the company said.
Meanwhile, Japan's government said it would try to decontaminate "the widest possible area" in that period before deciding whether the tens of thousands who have been forced to flee their homes will be allowed to return, said Goshi Hosono, an adviser to Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
"As we expect to ship radiation detection devices to the domestic and Japanese markets later this month, we continue to see increased interest in our products from a variety of individual and institutional consumers in Japan, and here in the United States," said Mr. Jacques Tizabi, UNDT's Chairman and CEO. "As the nuclear crisis continues, we have noticed a higher level of interest in the more sophisticated meters of which we have more access to inventory, and not just the basic personal dosimeters. Based on the interest level at the present time, we expect to see an increase in orders for our more sophisticated survey meters designed for detecting radiation on surfaces in particular in food and water," he added.

UNDT - Universal Detection Technology

News: - Universal Detection Technology Announces Record Revenues for Third Quarter of 2011

Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (OTCBB: UNDT), a reseller of early-warning monitoring technologies that protect against biological, chemical, and radiological threats, announced today that its revenues for the quarter ended September 30, 2011 were the highest quarterly revenues in more than three years. The increase is primarily due to high demand for radiation detection equipment both domestically and internationally. The Company is also beginning to see increased sales from its newly remodeled online store, which can be viewed at http://shop.udetection.com/en/1-home.
The Company's third quarter revenues increased 6,000% to $113,519 from $1,821 during third quarter 2010. The unfortunate nuclear disaster in Japan created a large market for equipment used for detection of harmful radiation in the ambient environment and on surfaces. Currently, the demand far outweighs the supply but in the long term it is anticipated that increased production capacity will eventually reduce the gap and bring the market to equilibrium. It is our belief, however, that this new equilibrium will be at much higher quantities than in pre-disaster times. This is due to increased global awareness of the hazards of radiation and the long term effects of the disaster in Japan, in particular the effects on food safety, which will require decades to completely clear up.
"We are seeing substantial revenue growth largely due to the demand for Radiation Detection in Japan. We look forward to continuing our efforts in Japan and worldwide. Management recently returned from Tokyo where we had the opportunity to meet with customers and prospects, along with medical professionals and ordinary citizens and discuss long term planning for radiation detection. As a result, as previously announced, we are now developing a new radiation detector which will communicate results via Bluetooth to a smartphone. We are anticipating launching the new device in the second quarter of 2012," said Jacques Tizabi, UNDT's Chairman and CEO.

Universal Detection Technology
Universal Detection Technology (UNDT) is a global leader in the dynamic intersection between bio life sciences and security. UNDT supplies government agencies, defense sector and commercial companies with the early-warning monitoring technologies and counter-terrorism training programs that protect people from bioterrorism and other infectious health threats.
Threat of Bioterrorism
The tragic events of September 11, 2001 redefined a new age of public safety and security, not only for the United States, but also for the entire world.
In the wake of the tragedy, the world was shocked to learn that another nontraditional, deadly asymmetric weapon was being deployed: lethal biological weapons. A week after 9/11, envelopes containing anthrax spores, were delivered by the U.S. Postal Service to five news media outlets, followed by an October 9th delivery of anthrax-laden letters to two U.S. Senate offices.
By November 2001, 22 people in four states and the District of Columbia contracted anthrax, many of them through the tainting of letters via the postal sorting machines. In all, the bioterrorism attack claimed six lives.
The Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism, led by an independent U.S. congressional committee, asserts that a large scale biological attack, expected to hit somewhere in the world by the end of 2013.
Along with the grave predictions in the December 2008 report, World at Risk, the Commission listed recommendations on how the government can reduce the risk of a biological attack. In January 2010, the commission issued a report card following up on those recommendations. For its efforts to “enhance the nation’s capabilities for rapid response to prevent biological attacks from inflicting mass casualties,” the government received an “F” letter grade.
Because bioweapons can be purchased or engineered at relatively low costs, can induce mass casualties and are oftentimes undetected by on-the-ground law enforcement, bioterrorism should be a chief concern in the international efforts to combat terrorists.
Bioterrorism can occur anywhere in the world, at any time. Lethal bioagents can be used as WMDs against military or civilians, via commercial shipping to a mass population or by aerosol in a public place, to name a few. The result could have catastrophic consequences, with an international pandemic and mass casualties.
Bioweapons prevention and training, along with rapid detection and on-site diagnosis, is the first chain in the link for an effective response to a bioterrorist threat.

Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (OTCBB: UNDT), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies that protect against biological, chemical, and radiological threats, today issued an update on the development of the Smartphone compatible radiation detector. UNDT is developing the device through an agreement with Honeywell International. The product is designed to detect radiation levels on surfaces and food and to automatically send the collected data to a smartphone through a user-friendly application, specifically designed to be used with the instrument.

The device will measure elevated levels of gamma radiation and transmit that data to a Bluetooth-ready smartphone. The dedicated smartphone app in development by the Company will give the user the ability to use simple menu-driven features to test for radiation in food, surfaces or clothing and subsequently share the accumulated data with other users through a mapping and social networking features.

The instrument in development will utilize a Cesium Iodide (CsI) scintillator for the detection of Gamma rays. With the detection range of 0.001 to 9.999 µSv/h the device will be capable of detecting traces of radiation on surfaces, clothing and in particular food contamination.

Nuclear experts have concerns regarding contamination of farmland close to the Fukushima Daaichi. Japan produces a total of 8.5 million tons of rice with Fukushima and neighboring Ibaraki, Miyagi and Iwate prefectures amounting to 1.56 million metric tons per year. Rice from more than 400 locations in Fukushima Prefecture has been tested, and levels of radioactive cesium were detected. Some experts have criticized the Japanese government for not doing enough to keep dangerous radioactive substances out of the food supply, threatening the health especially of children and pregnant women, who are thought to be more sensitive to radiation.

"We are very pleased with the level of progress on the development of the detector," said Mr. Jacques Tizabi, UNDT's President and CEO. "Both the detector and app are being developed with the end user in mind as we are creating a device that will be unique in the radiation detection industry," he added.

Universal Detection Technology's Smartphone Compatible Radiation Detection Device Featured in the Los Angeles Business Journal

Today : Tuesday 7 February 2012

Universal Detection Technology (OTCBB: UNDT), a leading developer and reseller of biological, chemical, and radiation detection equipment, is the subject of a recent article in the Los Angeles Business Journal.

Focusing specifically on public fears resulting from last year's earthquake and nuclear disaster in Japan, the article notes a sharply increased market for radiation detection devices. "A spate of large-scale disasters in recent years has added to worldwide demand for portable detection devices that monitor environmental hazards," says Jacques Tizabi, CEO of Universal Detection Technology. "Analysts see a growing market for such products and services in a world perceived to be increasingly dangerous in terms of not only radiological but also biological and chemical threats."

Most of the firm's customers are security companies and government agencies. The Company also sells directly to end users through its website.

A new smartphone compatible radiation detector that the company is developing through an agreement with Honeywell International is designed to register radiation levels in food, clothing or other surfaces and subsequently share the accumulated data electronically. The device will utilize a cesium iodide scintillator for the detection of gamma rays and have a 0.001 to 9.999 µSv/h detection range.

"Both the detector and user-friendly smartphone application are being developed with the objective of creating a state-of-the-art device unique in the radiation detection industry," adds Tizabi. "While the first generation will be working with Apple's iPhone, future generations will work with any designated Bluetooth-ready smartphone."

He notes that concerns over radioactive contamination in the Japanese food supply are driving sales for radiation detectors much as widely publicized anthrax attacks a decade earlier resulted in a continuing institutional demand for testing kits.

"The security concerns behind such demand are not likely to fade any time soon," says Tizabi.

Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (OTCBB: UNDT), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies that protect against biological, chemical, and radiological threats, announced today that that it has unveiled the first generation smartphone application for its RadSmart Device. The RadSmart is designed to detect radiation levels on surfaces and in food and to automatically send the collected data to a smartphone. RadSmart is being developed in collaboration with Honeywell India (a unit of Honeywell International) and marketed by UNDT, under its brand.

RadSmart will utilize a Cesium Iodide (CsI) scintillator for the detection of Gamma rays. (CsI) scintillators are the most sensitive detection mechanisms for detecting Gamma radiation. RadSmart will be sensitive enough to measure normal radiation levels to 100 to 200 times that intensity. With the planned detection range of 0.001 to 9.999 µSv/h the device is expected to be capable of detecting traces of radiation on surfaces, clothing and, in particular, food contamination.

The smartphone application will give the user the ability to choose to utilize the device for detecting contamination in food or on surfaces, log the readings and share the accumulated readings with other users and databases through its social networking features. The application has been designed with the everyday user in mind with easily navigable menu options and options for sharing the data through Facebook, Twitter and radiation mapping databases.

Almost a year after the Sendai earthquake and tsunami that caused the meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi, reports are emerging regarding the extent of release of radiation into the atmosphere. A study, published in the peer reviewed journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, states that the disaster released about 36,000 terabecquerels of Cesium-137, a radioactive byproduct of nuclear fission, more than twice the 15,000 terabecquerels Japanese authorities estimated -- and approximately 42% as much radioactivity as Chernobyl. The accumulation of Cesium-137 on farmland is a big issue with the Japanese ministry of agriculture mandating that 5 cm of topsoil should be removed prior to any farming activity.

"A year after the Fukushima disaster, the focus of the Japanese government has increasingly moved to the decontamination of the disaster area," said Mr. Jacques Tizabi, UNDT's Chairman and CEO. "RadSmart has been designed for this specific scenario as it will be able to geo-locate the particular test surface and compare data before and after decontamination," he added.
