Rice says West gives Iran 'couple of weeks' before pushing for UN action

NEW YORK (AFX) - Western powers will wait a 'couple of weeks' before pushing for tough UN action against Iran and offering new incentives for it to renounce its controversial nuclear activities, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said.

Rice made her remarks to ABC television after two days of intensive consultations here among the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany on an approach to Tehran's suspected effort to build a nuclear bomb.

'We agreed that we will continue to seek a (UN) Security Council resolution, but that we would wait for a couple of weeks while the Europeans design an offer to the Iranians that would make clear that they have a choice that would allow them to have a civil nuclear program,' she said.

Key UN Council Members Agree To Give Iran Options To Study

UNITED NATIONS (AP)--Key Security Council nations agreed Tuesday to present Iran with a choice of benefits or sanctions to consider in deciding whether to suspend uranium enrichment, a move which will delay a U.N. resolution to curb Iran's nuclear program, a European official said.

Political directors of the U.S., Russia, China, Britain and France as well as Germany made the decision to present Tehran with the possible carrots and sticks at a meeting following more than three hours of talks by their foreign ministers Monday night that failed to reach agreement on the resolution.

As a result of Tuesday's decision, political directors from the three European countries that had been spearheading negotiations with Iran will spend the next few days preparing a package of benefits and sanctions , the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because there has been no official announcement.

The package will be presented to European Union foreign ministers on the sidelines of an E.U. meeting in Brussels on Monday, and when approved will be presented to the Iranian government, the official said.
