22 Januar, 2009

Wampfler
http://www.wampfler.com/index.asp?la...earch=&search=

Turin, Italy:

Closer views of the induction charging facility. The bus must stop accurately so that the charging plate can be lowered over the correct portion of roadway. Of course this is only possible when there are no other (illegally) parked vehicles blocking this road surface facility:

Vossloh Kiepe mit viel Energie
arbeitet, nämlich das Aufladen
der Akkus elektrisch angetriebener
Busse mittels Induktion. Über
Schleifen in der Fahrbahn sollen die
Akkus aufgeladen werden können,
beispielsweise während die Busse
über eine freie Busspur fahren. Oder
die Induktion sorgt auf Straßen mit
gemischtem Verkehr an Bushaltestellen
für das Aufladen der Akkus.
Bei Vossloh Kiepe haben sie hohe
Erwartungen an diese Technologie,
obwohl noch kein konkretes Datum
für die Anwendung der ersten experimentellen
Systeme genannt wurde.
In Deutschland besteht jedenfalls
großes Interesse an dieser neuen
Entwicklung.

KMB to conduct trial of zero-emission Supercapacitor Bus

KMB is planning to introduce a zero-emission supercapacitor bus to Hong Kong for a trial in July 2010.

The supercapacitor bus is an electric bus powered by supercapacitor technology. When fully charged, a fully air-conditioned supercapacitor bus can run continuously for 5 km. Unlike trolley buses, the supercapacitor bus does not require an extensive network of continuous overhead cables to operate. Because of its rapid charging speed, the supercapacitor technology is well suited for bus operations, which typically require frequent stops within relatively short distances. Rapid charging can be conducted at bus stops while passengers board and alight, taking approximately 30 seconds for 1 km of power.

Edmond Ho, KMB Managing Director, said, “KMB is committed to environmental protection and has been studying the feasibility of applying various green technologies to buses. We believe the supercapacitor bus holds the best promise in the near term. We are therefore introducing the bus to Hong Kong for a trial.”

The supercapacitor bus is a truly green bus because it produces zero roadside emissions. As the supercapacitor does not rely on chemical reactions to store electrical energy, it is more environmentally friendly than battery-based electric engines. Furthermore, the supercapacitor can most effectively capture energy from regenerative braking, making it more efficient in electricity consumption than trolley buses.

In terms of both economics and environmental performance, the supercapacitor bus is a more attractive technology than other low-emission or zero-emission green bus technologies currently available.

The supercapacitor bus has been in commercial operation in Shanghai for four years and is currently showcased on shuttle bus routes serving the Shanghai World Expo. Positive comments from passengers of the supercapacitor bus include a quieter and smoother ride than that on a conventional bus. Several US cities are currently exploring introducing the supercapacitor bus technology for trials.

An electric bus that recharges itself at bus stops will go on trial on Hong Kong roads. The bus has a quick-charging electricity storage device.
“Chargers will be installed at our bus stops so that the bus can recharge while loading and offloading passengers, but we won’t need a charger at every stop to begin with,” When fully charged, the air-conditioned bus can travel for five kilometres with a full load and up to nine kilometres empty.

In March 2010 a more advanced variant of the RPEV was launched in Seoul, Korea. Known as the On-Line Electric Vehicle (OLEV) the technology is being tested on a 2.2km route at Seoul zoo which is served by a 'road train' that had previously been criticised for its diesel exhaust fumes. If the technology proves viable it will be installed along the bus lanes in many city streets, as buses account for 30% of all city traffic and electrifying them will have significant impact in reducing urban air pollution.
Further information can be found at this link which opens in a new window:-
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news...117_62152.html.

The On-Line Electric Vehicle (OLEV) gets its power supply from an electric facility underground without the use of surface power lines, through a magnetic field that it transforms into electricity.

in Hong Kong:

BYD's Storage Strategy
An energy storage unit is essentially a large battery pack. BYD currently makes one such product and plans to add a second to its lineup based on an exclusive "iron battery" technology.

Already available is a cabinet-shaped, 380-volt unit with an output of 200 per kwh. One of these units has been installed at BYD's Future Village to provide outdoor power.
BYD says the unit uses about 1,200 "iron batteries" to store 800 KW of electricity, which could satisfy eight months of consumption for a household of four. The unit has a 20-year lifespan and can be fully charged in four hours.
A future product is a 380-volt energy storage unit with an output of 1 MW per hour and 4,000 kwh of storage capacity. It's now undergoing tests at BYD's research institute and hasn't been released to the public.

BYD to roll out electric bus K9 this month
By Amanda Zheng From Gasgoo.com
September 21, 2010

Chinese battery and automaker BYD Co. will roll out its first electric bus, BYD K9, at the end of this month, and display the zero-emission bus at the "China (Changsha) Technology Seminar" during October 11-12, Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday.

The ironcell-powered BYD K9 is now is in the final phase of assembly and debugging. With an impressive silver body, fashionable extra big window and vivid BYD logo, the K9 is 12 meters long, weighting 18 tons and a one-step low floor bus.

Similar with ordinary buses in appearance, the K9's running cost is otherwise 15% lower than the existing diesel buses due to the use of new energy.

Operating costs of K9 come to 15% of that of a diesel vehicle, said the executive, noting that the environmental-friendly model makes it possible for a company to save CNY 170,000 a year. K9, expected to go through a test by the government at the end of this year, will be available in Changsha at around CNY 2 million (=222'222€) at the beginning of next year.

The BYD K9 can run up to 300 Kilometers on a full charge, while ordinary buses can only run about 200 Kilometers at full capacity. One electric bus can thus save 170,000 yuan ($25,300) on running costs compared to a common bus, said Liu Xiangjun, general manager of Changsha BYD Auto Co., Ltd..

BYD is currently building 20 K9's in the Changsha base, and if the bus passes emissions test, practical driving assessment and other relevant tests, the company will then put the K9 into mass production and launch it to the domestic market immediately, Liu revealed.

The Chinese government has been active in establishing charging stations for electric buses and other supporting facilities across the country so as to ensure the smooth operation of electric buses.

BYD Europe B.V., of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, a subsidiary of the Chinese battery and car manufacturer BYD, is co-operating with the Essen-based utility RWE in the fields of electric vehicles and charging facilities from now on. Contracts for this purpose have been signed in the past few days. BYD and RWE are planning to take new initiatives for CO2-free electric mobility in Europe.

The companies have agreed to offer package deals for their European clients, consisting of BYD's electric vehicles and RWE's fast charging posts and eco-electricity. 2012 will mark the start of test markets. That will also be market launch year of the both BYD's series models, the F3DM and the e6, in some selected European countries. A joint fleet trial is planned in Germany beforehand, in 2011.

The F3DM plug-in hybrid has already been marketed to end-customers in China since March 2010. Its endurance is 60-100 kilometers depending on different drive conditions, while running on electricity alone. The e6, by contrast, is a pure electric vehicle with battery range of around 300 kilometers. An e6 accelerates from 0 - 100 km/h in ten seconds. The model is also designed for fast charging and can accommodate a maximum charge input of around 100 kW. That means a full charge takes about less than one hour.

In addition to their joint sales activities, both companies have decided on close co-operation in the important field of international standardization. Together, they are going to pursue the setting of standards for alternating and direct-current charging infrastructure in Europe and China.

Yongping Chen, BYD Auto Europe Manager, comments: "BYD would like to bring its electric vehicles to Europe, and will start selling such EVs around 2012 in some selected countries where the governments have clear targets/incentive policies for CO2 emission reduction and where the charging infrastructure is (or will be) available.”

Two demo vehicles are on display at RWE's Berlin Roadshow.

"As a provider of intelligent charging infrastructure systems, RWE is already active in 16 European countries today, for example in Austria, the Netherlands and in the United Kingdom," notes Carolin Reichert, Head of E-Mobility at RWE, underlining the importance of the European market. "In this respect we're working together with the international RWE subsidiaries, with third-party mobility providers and of course with other regional energy suppliers. We estimate that more than 300 000 pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids will be on the streets of European cities and metropolitan areas by 2015. Our co-operation with BYD re-emphasizes that we are actively engaged in market development and collaborating with leading automotive manufacturers."

In Germany, RWE is pursuing the construction of public charging points further at a rapid pace. Thus the company has already commissioned 450 charging points in Germany, to which it supplies electricity exclusively from renewable sources. TÜV South reviews and confirms this annually.

The fascination of electric travel is the keynote theme of RWE's Automotive Electricity Roadshow, which is making its second appearance at Berlin's Sony Center from today until 22 September 2010.

Interested visitors can test-drive electric vehicles, try out RWE's intelligent charging post and "top up" with a host of new impression. Roadshow 2010's next stop will be Munich, from 19 - 21 October 2010.

ENER1 TO SUPPLY LI-ION PACKS TO HYUNDAI FOR ELECTRIC BUSESPublished at 17.08.2010

The American battery producer Ener1 http://www.ener1.com/ has signed up Hyundai Heavy Industries as a new customer for its Li-ion batteries. Hyundai in Korea will receive these Li-ion battery packs for electric buses; the packs are similar configurations as the packs currently in operation in California with AC Transit. The Hyundai contract is immediate; packs will be in buses on the road this year.

At the same time Ener1 decided to split the company into three product verticals, each with profit and loss responsibility.
One of the verticals will be Transportation, which comprises light and heavy duty vehicles including buses, military and industrial, and continues to be the company’s primary market. The light duty passenger market remains a focus, but Ener1 is more aggressively pursuing higher-margin opportunities in light-duty fleet, heavy-duty buses, and military applications.

Ener1 has publicly announced three heavy duty programs, including Hyundai and AC Transit. Including all other projects Ener1 is currently installing capacity to supply up to 11,000 EV pack equivalents or 260 MWh of lithium-ion battery pack systems. Capacity could be increased to 15,000 EV pack equivalents quickly and inexpensively as customer demand dictates.

BATTERY ELECTRIC AND DIESEL BUSES COMPARED HEAD TO HEAD
Published at 27.07.2010

A comparative trial between Britain's first viable full-size, battery-powered bus – the Optare Solo EV – and a diesel engine equivalent, could accelerate the introduction of cleaner buses to Britain.

Warwickshire bus and coach operator Johnsons Coach & Bus Travel is a partner in the six-day trial, which takes place in Stratford-upon-Avon this month and will involve measuring air and noise pollution on town streets.

Other partners include Aston University, which will focus on the practical findings, and Coventry University, which will look at the socio-economic impacts. Emissions, fuel consumption and running costs will all be compared. Co-ordination of the trial is by South Warwickshire sustainability consultancy Greenwatt Technology, and it has been jointly funded by Stratford District Council and Stratford Town Trust. Stratford Park and Ride is the selected proving ground.

Optare hopes that the research will provide a sound environmental case and demonstrate commercial viability for the use of electric buses. Based in Henley in Arden, Johnsons Coach & Bus Travel was awarded a Green Bus Fund grant of £280,000 by the DfT for the purchase of alternatively fuelled vehicles. The firm says this trial could result in more electric buses on the streets of Stratford-upon-Avon very soon.

Next Stop: Ultracapacitor Buses
A U.S.-Chinese venture is out to prove the benefits of quick-charge buses.

By Tyler Hamilton

ultracapacitors could offer the greenest and most economical way of powering inner-city buses.

Fast charger: A bus that runs entirely on ultracapacitors charges up at a bus stop in Shanghai. The buses can only travel three to five miles between charges, but the ultracapacitors allow for fast recharging at designated bus stops.
Credit: Sinautec Automobile Technologies

There's just one catch: the best ultracapacitors can only store about 5 percent of the energy that lithium-ion batteries hold, limiting them to a couple of miles per charge.

Sinautec Automobile Technologies, based in Arlington, VA, and its Chinese partner, Shanghai Aowei Technology Development Company, have spent the past three years demonstrating the approach with 17 forty-one seat municipal buses on the outskirts of Shanghai. On October 21, the two companies will offer a one-day demonstration at American University in Washington, DC, where an 11-seat minibus running on ultracapacitors will spend the day shuttling people around campus.

The trick is to turn some bus stops along the route into charge stations, says Dan Ye, executive director of Sinautec. Unlike a conventional trolley bus that has to continually touch an overhead power line, Sinautec's ultracapacitor buses take big sips of electricity every two or three miles at designated charging stations, which double as bus stops. When at these stations, a collector on the top of the bus rises a few feet and touches an overhead charging line. Within a couple of minutes, the ultracapacitor banks stored under the bus seats are fully charged.

"It's a brilliant concept," says ultracapacitor expert Joel Schindall, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. "It's not well suited for electric-only cars, but it is practical to stop a bus every few city blocks."

The buses can also capture energy from braking, and the company says that recharging stations can be equipped with solar panels (although this is mainly to further the perception that the vehicles have a lower carbon footprint). Ye says the buses use 40 percent less electricity compared to an electric trolley bus, mainly because they're lighter and have the regenerative braking benefits. They're also competitive with conventional buses based on fuel savings over the vehicle's 12-year life, based on current oil and electricity prices. Sinautec estimates that one of its buses has one-tenth the energy cost of a diesel bus and can achieve lifetime fuel savings of $200,000.

"The ultracapacitor bus is also cheaper than lithium-ion battery buses," says Ye. "We used the Olympics (lithium-ion) bus as a model and found ours about 40 percent less expensive with a far superior reliability rating."
Ye adds that the environmental benefits are compelling. "Even if you use the dirtiest coal plant on the planet, it generates a third of the carbon dioxide of diesel when used to charge an ultracapacitor."

Buses in the Shanghai pilot are made by Sunwin Bus, a Chinese joint venture company with Volvo of Sweden, and uses ultracapacitors manufactured by Shanghai Aowei. Foton America Bus, based in Germantown, TN, will be manufacturing the ultracapacitor buses that will be sold in the United States. The ultracapacitors are made of activated carbon and have an energy density of six watt-hours per kilogram. (For comparison, a high-performance lithium-ion battery can achieve 200 watt-hours per kilogram.) Clifford Clare, chief executive of Foton America, says another 60 buses will be delivered early next year with ultracapacitors that supply 10 watt-hours per kilogram.

"The ones in Shanghai right now have been on the road for three years without incident, without failure whatsoever, which in the bus industry is phenomenal," says Clare, who adds that his company is in talks with New York City, Chicago, and some towns in Florida about trialing the buses. "It will end up being a third generation of the product, which will give 20 miles [of range per charge] or better."

Sinautec is also in discussions with MIT's Schindall about developing ultracapacitors of higher energy density using vertically aligned carbon nanotube structures that give the devices more surface area for holding a charge.

"So far we're able to get twice the energy density of an existing ultracapacitor, but that's not enough," says Schindall. "We're trying to get about five times." Schindall says that this would create an ultracapacitor with one-quarter of the energy density of a lithium-ion battery.

"Right now the [Foton] buses can only go every other stop, a range of about 5 or 10 city blocks, and that's okay for some routes, but here in the Boston area that would be too far [between charging spots]," Schindall adds. "If they could double that, or even quadruple that, it would increase by an order of magnitude the numbers of routes for which it could be a technical solution."

There are some other important limitations. The 41-passenger buses, based on current technology, lose 35 percent of their range when air conditioning is turned on (from about 5 miles to about 3 miles), and have weak acceleration. But even under these conditions, they could still prove practical for municipal, campus, airport, and tourist buses.

"We want to replace a large portion of the diesel fleet in the United States," says Ye. "We do need to have charging stations throughout various points of the network, but as energy density goes up, the number of stations will go down."
